Blue Jays are MLB’s most unique team as trade deadline approaches

This is the one season where, when we say that just about every team has a chance, it’s not overoptimistic hyperbole. Instead, it’s reality. That also means that the MLB Trade Deadline is going to be very different than what we’ve become accustomed to. One team that will be very unique is the Toronto Blue Jays.

Entering play on Thursday, the Blue Jays are in last place in the American League East. Sitting 13.5 games behind first place, you would think Toronto’s fate as a seller would be sealed. However, they are also 6.5 games out of the Wild Card, which means that a playoff berth is well within their sights. All it takes is just one hot streak, and everything will change.

Yes, there are currently five other teams sitting between Toronto and the postseason, but there’s a lot of baseball left to be played. What is a team to do? Whether you buy or sell ultimately drives team psychology. The decision sends a real message to the players on the field. It’s important to be respectful of the effort being put forward, and a playoff berth is always going to be the end goal for everyone.

Flat-out selling doesn’t send the right message to the players, and definitely not to the fans. But the long-term outlook of the franchise has to be the number one concern. In Louis Varland, it appears that the Blue Jays have found their closer of the future. That takes Jeff Hoffman out of the equation after previously losing the job and struggling. However, he did save 33 games last season.

Hoffman is striking out a career-high 14 batters per nine innings this season, and his 2.66 FIP offers upside compared to his 4.40 ERA. Under contract through 2027 at a reasonable rate, Hoffman could be a desirable target for a team like the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Baltimore Orioles, or Minnesota Twins looking to lock down their bullpen.

Moving Hoffman allows the Blue Jays to free up salary and add prospect capital while giving Hoffman a change of scenery.

George Springer had a great run with Toronto, but he’s a free agent after this season. The outfielder is hitting just .225 with 10 home runs and 26 RBI, and replacing his production wouldn’t be too heavy of a lift. Anything the Blue Jays can get from a player they are likely to move on from would be prudent.

Trading two veterans could allow Toronto to restock their prospects corps, or give them more capital to make other moves. Either way, the Blue Jays are in a unique situation as sellers who can still make the postseason.
