Former Arizona Cardinals TE Travis Vokolek retiring from NFL

· Yahoo Sports

Former Arizona Cardinals tight end Travis Vokolek is retiring from the NFL after three NFL seasons. He announced that on Wednesday via Instagram.

Vokolek suffered a serious neck injury on a kickoff last season and was placed on injured reserve. He was an exclusive rights free agent, which meant the Cardinals could have retained him for the league's minimum salary, but they chose to not tender him back in March. It was presumably because he was not medically cleared.

He made the decision after months of doctors visits, and he is following medical advice.

This is what he posted:

After numerous visits with doctors and neurologists over the past couple of months, I have been advised to medically retire from the NFL due to a serious neck injury that I suffered this past season. I am extremely grateful and blessed to have been able to live out my childhood dream of playing football at the highest level for the past three years. Football has taught me many life lessons and given me unforgettable memories.

I am forever grateful to all my teammates, coaches, trainers, and others who have supported my family and I along the way. A sincere thank you to the Arizona Cardinals training staff for being first class with the care and support they provided my family and I during this hard time.

I am especially grateful for my wife who has been there the whole time through the many ups and downs of the NFL. She has never wavered and has been extremely supportive through it all.

I have attacked everyday of being a professional football player with passion, determination, and discipline. I can say that I truly left everything out on the field. Thank you for all of the love and support. Lastly, thank you football!

Vokolek began his NFL career on the practice squad of the Baltimore Ravens in 2023 after going undrafted out of Nebraska. The Cardinals signed him to their active roster late that season, and he was the team's fourth tight end for the rest of that season and two more seasons.

He appeared in eight total games. He played 84 total offensive snaps, never getting thrown the ball. He also played 51 on special teams, logging two special teams tackles last season.

Several former Cardinals and Ravens teammates commented on his post, wishing him well.

We also wish him well in whatever comes next for him.
