Longtime boys basketball coach Jeff Ackermann was named the next head coach of the West Allegheny boys basketball team during a school board meeting on Wednesday, July 22, replacing Ben O’Connor, who resigned after spending the past three seasons with the program.

A coach who has had success building programs from the ground up, winning five WPIAL, a PIAA championship and has won over 400 games, Ackermann spent the last six seasons at Baldwin, where he turned the Highlanders into a WPIAL title contender.
During the 2023-24 campaign, Ackermann led Baldwin as the No. 4 seed to the WPIAL championship game for the first time since the 1985 season. The team has also reached the playoffs in four of the past five seasons.
Before getting hired as the head coach at Baldwin in 2020, Ackermann spent six seasons at Pine-Richland, winning two WPIAL titles and reaching the state title game.
His first coaching stop in his career was right here in the Beaver Valley at Moon Area, spending 13 seasons and winning the school its first three WPIAL championships from 2004-06 and a state title in 2004. He posted a 224-116 record with the Tigers before being let go in March 2014.
Ackermann will now be tasked with rebuilding the West Allegheny program, which has posted a 44-66 overall record in the past five seasons and a 11-43 mark in section play.
The team’s best finish came in 2021-22, when they finished (10-12, 5-5) and qualified for the WPIAL playoffs.
