Mississauga man charged in human-trafficking probe; shots fired at Whitchurch-Stouffville home

Toronto Police said a Mississauga man was charged on Wednesday in a human-trafficking investigation that began last month.
Police said the accused, “through a combination of deception, coercion and control,” allegedly trafficked a 32-year-old woman, forcing her to take sexualized pictures that were distributed online.
Police said the money the victim earned was allegedly given to the accused and was kept by him.
Police said investigators executed a search warrant at a home in Mississauga on Wednesday, where they arrested the accused.
Elijah Benjamin, 36, has been charged with assault, theft over $5,000, procuring and advertising another person’s sexual services, trafficking in persons over 18 and other charges.

Witnesses sought in Whitchurch-Stouffville shooting
York Regional Police are seeking witnesses after a home was shot up in Whitchurch-Stouffville on Thursday.
At about 1 a.m., police said officers responded to reports of gunfire at a residence in the Flute St. and Noah’s Farm Trail area. When officers arrived, they found damage to a second-floor window.
Police said the residence was occupied at the time of the shooting, but no one was injured.
Police said a grey vehicle was spotted in the area, which was seen fleeing after several shots were fired at the home.
No suspect descriptions were available.
Police asked anyone who has not yet spoken with them to come forward. They are also seeking surveillance video or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the shooting.
Police said no motive has been confirmed and that the investigation is ongoing.

Man charged in GO station assault
A man is facing charges after two GO Transit employees were assaulted earlier this month in Oshawa, Durham Regional Police said.
Police said officers were called to the Oshawa GO Station on July 9 at about 12:50 a.m. after a man allegedly attacked two GO Transit workers after he was told to leave the premises.
He fled from the scene, but police said officers located the man a short time later after searching the area with help from the K9 unit and a police helicopter. They said he was hiding in dense brush and tall grass and was arrested without incident.
The victims suffered minor injuries, police said.
Emmerson John Forrester, 19, of Oshawa, was charged with two counts of assault. He was subsequently released on an undertaking.
