As I write this Hoddle today, I’m currently playing a game called Wingspan.

The Wingspan I’m playing right now is a mobile app game; but it originated as a board game. I was introduced it when my sister-in-law bought it for her family for Christmas based on internet recommendations. My wife and I played it with them and were so obsessed we went out and bought a copy for ourselves. And then the expansions.

Wingspan is game that is basically about birdwatching. You have a board consisting of 15 slots across three habitats in which you play birds that you pick up from the deck. Each of these birds are worth a certain number of points, require a certain type and quantity of resource to play, and typically have some sort of ability or power that can be activated at various times depending on the bird.

There are three things I really love about Wingspan:

  1. There are multiple ways to go about winning. Bird points, bonus cards (which are like little mini missions as to types of birds you need to play), laying eggs, round end bonuses, etc. Depending on the cards you have, you can go about things in completely different ways game to game.
  2. It’s really kind of therapeutic. It just kinda scratches my brain in the right way, and even though I’m a competitive person it’s quite nice playing a game in which your efforts are largely self-contained: the focus is on building out your own board, with limited interactions with other players’ birds. And just how it all fits together – when you get a perfect combination of powers in a habitat that can generate 8 points in a single turn – it’s nice when a strategy comes off.
  3. I just like birds. It is what it is!

The mobile version is pretty decent as well. No ads or anything (it may cost money though, but don’t quote me on that) and you can play all the expansions in the online mode with two other players. Plus there’s no setup / pack up, and there’s a really nice, relaxing soundtrack. I’m not kidding, the music is super chill and it’s one of the few mobile games I’ve ever played where I won’t mute the sound.

So yeah. Wingspan is sweet. I don’t know what else to tell you! Check it out if you’re looking for a new boardgame (or mobile game!).

Have you played any good new games lately? Boardgames (or otherwise)?
