1. Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve, the most reliable snow spot in South Africa
Just outside Ceres, Matroosberg is widely considered the most reliable of all snow spots in South Africa, as we covered in our guide to Western Cape snow spots.
Its southern slopes hold snow for days after a cold front, and it even runs its own ski slope through the Ski Club of South Africa.
2. Ceres and the Hex River Valley, Western Cape
Ceres town, home to the province’s second highest peak, regularly draws families for snowball fights and snowman building whenever conditions allow, with the nearby Hex River Valley offering more open, dramatic mountain scenery.
3. Sani Pass, KwaZulu-Natal
One of the most iconic mountain passes in the country, Sani Pass sits on the KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho border.
Snow here can close the pass entirely, and earlier this winter a strong cold front did exactly that.
4. Afriski Mountain Resort, Lesotho
Sitting at over 3 200 metres, Afriski is the highest ski resort in Africa. It draws skiers from across southern Africa each winter, with fresh snowfall reported as recently as mid-July this season.

5. Rhodes and Naude’s Nek Pass, Eastern Cape
The village of Rhodes, close to Tiffindell, is a heritage-listed base for exploring the surrounding Drakensberg foothills.
Naude’s Nek, one of South Africa’s highest passes, often becomes impassable in winter once snow settles.
6. Golden Gate Highlands National Park, a rarer snow spot in South Africa
On the Free State’s Drakensberg escarpment, Golden Gate occasionally sees its sandstone cliffs and grasslands dusted white, offering a rarer, lower-altitude snow experience than the Lesotho and Eastern Cape high peaks.
