Paris Johnson, Josh Sweat, 2 other Arizona Cardinals placed on PUP

· Yahoo Sports

The Arizona Cardinals reported for training camp on Wednesday, and then on Thursday, before their first practice, they made a few procedural moves with injuries. Per the NFL transaction report, four players were placed on the preseason PUP (physically unable to perform) list.

Two were not surprising. Two were.

Cornerback Garrett Williams and tight end Tip Reiman were placed on PUP for injuries that have been known for a while. Reiman is coming back from a serious ankle injury, and Williams tore his Achilles last December. Williams was never going to be able to start training camp. There was hope that Reiman could.

The other two were surprising — left tackle Paris Johnson and outside linebacker Josh Sweat.

Johnson had a knee injury at the end of last season but was healthy enough to practice in the offseason program. Sweat played every game last season and ended the year healthy. He didn't participate in the offseason program, but he wasn't there for the voluntary part, opting to work out on his own.

Head coach Mike LaFleur told reporters before Thursday's practice that Johnson's situation is "just maintenance stuff" and that Sweat is similar. Both have something with their knee. Had training camp opened a week later than they had to this year, they probably would be ready to go. Neither will be back for the first block of practices. After that, they will see.

What is PUP?

The PUP list is for players who have football-related injuries. They cannot practice until they are cleared, and they can be removed from the list at any time, although they cannot return to it if they get hurt again. It does not open a roster spot.

If they are not activated before the final roster cutdown date, they can be moved to the regular-season PUP reserve, freeing a roster spot. The player would have to miss at least the first four weeks of the season.

Players coming back from injury

Running backs James Conner and Trey Benson, defensive lineman Walter Nolen and rookie linebacker Karson Sharar were all able start camp healthy and practice. None were able to practice in OTAs or minicamp. Benson and Nolen are coming off knee injuries. Conner is coming off a season-ending ankle injury and Sharar had a hamstring injury.
