Navneet Kaur, a 26-year-old Toronto resident, is the city’s 22nd homicide this year, police say.

A 37-year-old Brampton man was later arrested and is facing a murder charge in what investigators believe was a targeted shooting.

Police say officers responded at approximately 7:25 a.m. to a call for a shooting in the Humberwood and Rexdale Blvds. area, west of Woodbine Mall, in north Etobicoke.

Brief interaction with victim

It is alleged that the victim and suspect were having a brief interaction when the woman was suddenly shot by the man.

Emergency responders performed life saving measures on the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, cops said.

The suspect fled the scene on foot before officers arrived.

However, during the investigation, cops said officers with Ontario Provincial Police later located and arrested the suspect.

Duty Officer Scott Bradbury told reporters at the scene Friday that there was no extra concern for additional violence in the area.

“We feel that this is a localized issue, meaning that this woman was targeted and there is no extra risk to the neighbours,” Bradbury said.

Unknown if it was domestic dispute

Police could not confirm nor deny if the incident was a domestic dispute that turned fatal.

Sharnjeet Singh has been charged with first degree murder and failing to comply with an undertaking.

The accused was scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in downtown Toronto on Saturday morning.

“If you have any evidence or information, dash-cam video, video yourselves or you know someone that might be housing information on this, please call us,” Bradbury said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
