GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers made official the inevitable move with end Micah Parsons due before the official start of training camp.

They placed him on the reserve/physically unable to perform list July 28.

Parsons is recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee suffered against Denver in Week 15 last season. The move allows the Packers the right to keep Parsons from counting against the 53-man roster when the season starts if he is still rehabbing.

Parsons has said that he doesn’t expect to be ready until after the first month of the season, so the Packers are expected to keep him on PUP once final cuts are made. He would be forced to miss the first four games.

The Packers would have to have an open roster spot or must create one when he returns to game action.

Parsons was not among five Packers who were added to the PUP list July 27.

Instead he is among five more who did not pass their physicals before the team’s first practice July 29.

In addition to Parsons, tackle Brant Brooks, long snapper Matt Orzech, end Jordon Riley and nose tackle Nazir Stackhouse were placed on reserve/PUP.

The players are eligible for the list because of injuries suffered either during last season or offseason workouts.

Parsons and Riley, who tore his Achilles tendon last year, will remain on the list long term. The rest are likely to be activated soon provided their injuries aren’t serious.

The Packers generally place players who are still undergoing rehab on PUP at the start of camp and activate them once they’re ready to practice. All would be eligible to start the season on PUP if they don’t practice during training camp.

The club placed guard Aaron Banks, cornerback Kamal Hadden, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, tight end Tucker Kraft and tight end Luke Musgrave on PUP July 27. In addition, they placed running back Chris Harris on the non-football injury list, which is reserved for players who suffered injuries away from team-sanctioned activities.

All the PUP players count against the 90-man roster even though they’re not practicing.
