The town everyone thinks of when snow is mentioned
Sutherland snow in South Africa is one of those things everyone assumes is happening, even when it isn’t. Sutherland in the Northern Cape is famously South Africa’s coldest town, with midwinter lows that can drop to around -15°C.
Whenever snow talk starts anywhere in the country, plenty of people assume Sutherland must already be buried in it.

Sutherland snow in South Africa: What today’s forecast actually says
According to SAWS, today’s disruptive snow and rain warnings are focused on the Eastern Cape, southern KwaZulu-Natal, the southern Free State and the Lesotho border, not the Northern Cape.
Sutherland’s forecast for today stays fine and warm by comparison, despite its reputation.
Why the timing still matters
Locals in Sutherland traditionally consider August, not July, the town’s biggest snow month. That’s based on generations of observed patterns, not a single cold night.
So while today’s system is passing Sutherland by, real Sutherland snow in South Africa is still very much on the way. The region’s peak snow window is still to come, and it’s worth the wait.
Sutherland has always held a special place in my heart, not just for the snow, but for the stars. It’s home to the South African Astronomical Observatory and the Southern African Large Telescope, the biggest single optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere, and there’s genuinely nowhere else in the country where the sky feels quite that close.
If you’ve never stood under a Karoo night sky in winter, snow on the ground or not, it deserves a spot on every South African’s list.
