Angels Interim GM Comments on O’Hoppe, Silseth Trade

Los Angeles Angels interim general manager John Mozeliak spoke about the Angels’ trade with the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.

The Angels made their first notable trade of the deadline period on Wednesday, sending catcher Logan O’Hoppe and reliever Chase Silseth to the Texas Rangers for minor league infielder Angel Arredondo.

“We decided to get things moving today,” Mozeliak said. “As we enter this trading period, one of the things we are focused on is understanding change. Clearly, where the Angels are at right now, we need to do some things differently. We are trying to balance how to focus on the future, short-term and long-term, but this deal here allows us to free up some spots on our active roster, change some of the playing time and then also adding a young player to our system that we’re excited about.”

While they traded two major league talents for a Single-A infielder, Mozeliak is confident that the 19-year-old Arredondo is a key player for the Angels’ future.

“He’s really good with the defensive side of the ball, and has plus ball-to-bat skill,” Mozeliak said. “He was just a good baseball player, and I think adding those types of players is good. And so, in our system, he’s probably in the Top 10 in prospects. He wasn’t getting a lot of third-party recognition, but I do think he’s a better player than he’s getting mentioned for.”

Arredondo is in the middle of his third season as a professional, spending all of this season in Triple-A. He has eight homers and 47 RBIs this year, posting a .769 OPS over the course of 87 games this year.

What Did John Mozeliak Say About Logan O’Hoppe and Chase Silseth?

Mozeliak also spoke about the decision to send both O’Hoppe and Silseth in the other direction. O’Hoppe had been with the big league club since 2022, initially breaking out in 2023 before regressing over the past couple of years.

He had just a .565 OPS over 75 games this season, and had massive struggles behind the plate as well. Mozeliak described him as a player who needed a change of scenery, as well as someone who may not play as much as he needs.

The Angels have plenty of catching options, with Tyler Heinemann healthy and Travis d’Arnaud returning from the injured list with Sebastian Rivero on his way back.

Silseth was the biggest piece in the trade, as he has been one of the Angels’ best relievers this season. He had a 2.72 ERA through 47 appearances to pair with a 3.41 FIP.

“Not an easy decision,” Mozeliak said. “Moving controllable players is going to be the challenge in this whole exercise, because that’s mostly what we have. But we’re just going to try to pick and choose our spots where we can create that change, create a different trajectory for the organization.”

The Angels will likely make more trades in the coming days, as Mozeliak aims to put the Angels in a better position moving forward.
