An insight into how the Manchester City wingers will play has arrived

Antoine Semenyo, Ryan McAidoo, and Savinho all had a tremendous impact on the wings in Manchester City’s first preseason friendly against Inter Milan. Semenyo and Savinho displayed what they’re capable of on the left wing, as their ability to run at, and beat an opponent was impossible to ignore at the Kai Tak Stadium. Ryan McAidoo did exactly the same on the right wing. Enzo Maresca has utilised his wingers to devastating affect during his spells as the manager of Leicester City and Chelsea. That trend looks set to continue at Manchester City.

In an interview with Sam Lee for The Athletic, Antoine Semenyo has explained what Enzo Maresca wants from his wingers. The Manchester City wide men will be a precious attacking weapon for Enzo Maresca and the Italian manager does have the wingers in his squad who can meet his demands.

Antoine Semenyo has gone into detail about what Enzo Maresca wants from his wingers.

Antoine Semenyo was quick to point out that he had noticed how Enzo Maresca deployed his wingers while Maresca was the manager of Chelsea. The Ghana international was excited by the opportunity to operate in the space that Maresca’s team afford their wingers. By creating overloads in the middle of the pitch, it allows Maresca’s wingers the space to do what they do best. Semenyo explained: “When we played Chelsea when Maresca was there, his wide men were always high and wide and quite free. That was one of the things that excited me the most when he was appointed. I get to have one-v-one situations most of the game, and I’m looking forward to it.

Antoine Semenyo further explained that he has had meetings with Enzo Maresca about what is expected from him, and Manchester City’s other wingers. Semenyo said that Maresca wants his wingers to stay out wide and create opportunities. This is a role that Semenyo, Ryan McAidoo, and Jeremy Doku are made for. Rayan Cherki can also be included in this list. Semenyo explained: “I’ve had individual meetings with him on how he wants to set up, how he wants to play, his wide men, just overall as a team. It’s been good. His ideas are great, quite similar to Pep. If you watched the game (against Inter), you would have seen a couple of his ideas play out and it was good.

In some games (Guardiola) wanted me wide, some games he wanted me inside a little bit more, depending on our opposition. Enzo is just about being out wide and when you get the ball, create opportunities. It’s exciting.

Manchester City have the wingers that are more than capable fulfilling Maresca’s wish.

Antoine Semenyo’s explanation of what Enzo Maresca demands from his wingers marries up with what was on display in Manchester City’s first preseason friendly against Inter Milan. Semenyo, Savinho, and Ryan McAidoo had space to operate in and they were all a threat to the Inter Milan defence throughout the match in Hong Kong. Maresca’s tactics provided space out wide for them to operate in. It will be a constant throughout Manchester City’s matches this season, based on what Antoine Semenyo has said.

Despite being in the market for a winger, Manchester City have wingers capable of playing the ‘Maresca way’. Antoine Semenyo is an exceptional winger. He shone against Inter Milan. Ryan McAidoo could also step up this season. Jeremy Doku looks ideally suited to Maresca’s demands. The Belgian winger thrives in one-on-one situations. He is also coming off of a career best season. Doku could be set to go up another gear under Maresca. That wouldn’t be a far fetched conclusion on closer inspection.

Antoine Semenyo has provided a clear indication of what Enzo Maresca wants from his wingers. Manchester City have players capable of fulfilling Maresca’s demands, and that is one aspect of Manchester City’s attacking play to watch for when the 2026-27 season begins.
