Tigers sweep the A's

Keider Montero gave the Detroit Tigers exactly what they needed Sunday afternoon, delivering six scoreless innings as the Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Athletics with an 11-0 victory at Sutter Health Park.

The win gave Detroit a perfect 6-0 record against the Athletics this season, marking the first time in franchise history the Tigers have gone undefeated in a season series against the A’s. Detroit outscored the Athletics 32-7 during the three-game weekend series and improved to 54-58.

Montero allowed two hits and two walks while striking out two. He did not overpower the Athletics’ lineup, but he stayed away from the middle of the plate and continued to produce manageable contact. Montero retired 18 of the 23 batters he faced, and Oakland had only one runner reach third base against him.

The right-hander also received an early lead when Spencer Torkelson doubled home Gleyber Torres and Dillon Dingler with two outs in the first inning. Torres opened the game with a walk before Dingler lined a single into left field. After consecutive strikeouts, Torkelson drove a ball into the gap in left-center field to put Detroit ahead 2-0.

Montero worked around a two-out walk in the bottom of the first and a leadoff single from Lawrence Butler in the second. Tyler Soderstrom’s two-out ground-rule double in the third represented Oakland’s best scoring opportunity, but Jonah Heim followed with a soft groundout in front of the plate.

Detroit broke the game open in the fourth.

Max Clark and Ben Malgeri walked before Zach McKinstry loaded the bases with a single. Torres followed with a two-run single through the middle, extending the lead to 4-0. Kevin McGonigle eventually walked to reload the bases, and Eduardo Valencia greeted reliever Elvis Alvarado with a two-run double into left field.

The six-run cushion allowed Montero to continue attacking the strike zone without needing to generate strikeouts. He faced another unusual interruption in the fifth when home-plate umpire Jeremie Rehak was forced to leave after being struck in the mask by a foul ball.

Montero hit Henry Bolte with his first pitch following the delay, but Hao-Yu Lee, McGonigle and Torkelson turned a double play to end the inning. The sequence was an example of the defense supporting a starter who was pitching primarily to contact.

Montero finished his afternoon with his best inning. He struck out Soderstrom with a slider, retired Heim on a fly ball to Clark and then struck out Tommy White with another slider. He completed six scoreless innings with only two hits and two walks allowed, lowering his ERA to 3.17.

Detroit added four more runs in the eighth after Torres walked for the fourth time and Dingler was hit by a pitch. McGonigle walked to load the bases before Valencia lined his second two-run double of the afternoon into left field.

Torkelson followed with an RBI single, and Valencia scored when Lee grounded into a forceout. Valencia finished with two doubles and four RBIs, while Torkelson drove in three runs. Torres reached base five times, collecting a single and four walks.

James Outman completed the scoring in the ninth with a solo home run off position player Carlos Cortes. It was Outman’s fifth home run of the season and gave the Tigers their final 11-0 advantage.

Tyler Holton, Drew Anderson and Enmanuel De Jesus covered the final three innings to preserve the shutout. The Athletics collected five hits against Detroit’s bullpen but went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position for the game.

The Tigers dominated the season matchup against the Athletics, winning all six games and scoring at least six runs in each contest. Sunday’s win completed that historic sweep while giving Detroit some momentum before continuing its road trip Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners.
