First Fatal Crash On Mumbai-Pune Expressway Connecting Link Kills Wakad Youth Leader, Six Injured

Navi Mumbai: The first fatal accident on the recently opened Connecting Link section of the Mumbai–Pune Expressway claimed the life of a youth leader and entrepreneur from Wakad and left six others injured after a speeding Toyota Fortuner rammed into the rear of a goods tempo inside the tunnel in the early hours of Friday.

The deceased, identified as Tushar Bhumkar, a resident of the Bhumkar Chowk area in Wakad, died on the spot after the Fortuner (MH 14 MG 0007) crashed into a vegetable-laden goods tempo (MH 01 CR 7075) at around 1.30 am. The accident occurred inside the nearly 9-km-long tunnel on the 13.3-km Connecting Link, which was opened to traffic on May 1.
Six Injured, Tempo Driver And Cleaner Hospitalised
Six persons were injured in the collision, including the driver and cleaner of the goods tempo. While one occupant of the Fortuner sustained grievous injuries, three others suffered minor injuries. The injured tempo driver, Rambhau Mundbe, and cleaner, Kuldeep Bapurao Pawar, were also admitted for treatment. Police said all five occupants of the Fortuner are residents of the Bhumkar Chowk area in Wakad.
SUV Driver Booked Under BNS And Motor Vehicles Act
According to the FIR registered by the Lonavala City Police, the Fortuner, driven by Amit Talaram Bhati of Wakad, was travelling from Pune towards Mumbai when it allegedly rammed into the rear of the tempo at high speed. Based on Pawar's complaint, Bhati has been booked under Sections 106(1), 281, 125(a), 125(b) and 324(4)(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 184 and 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

One person died while six others sustained injuries. A case has been registered against the driver of the SUV, and further investigation is underway. The SUV driver himself is injured. Prima facie, the cause of accident is the high speed of the SUV," said Police Inspector Sachin Patil of Lonavala City Police.
The accident brought Mumbai-bound traffic on the expressway to a halt for nearly two hours. Vehicles were diverted via the old Mumbai–Pune Highway until the damaged vehicles were cleared and traffic movement was restored.
Highway Police personnel, IRB patrol teams, the Devdoot emergency response unit and other rescue agencies rushed to the spot, rescued the injured from the mangled SUV and shifted them to a nearby hospital. Bhumkar's body was sent for post-mortem examination.
