Mo Salah gets enthusiastic welcome from Trabzonspor after signing with Turkish club

Mo Salah has officially found his new home. The former Liverpool star signed with Trabzonspor, a club in Turkey's Süper Lig, the side announced on Thursday, Aug. 6.

Trabzonspor posted a series of photos on X of Salah signing his contract at a table, sitting with club president Ertuğrul Doğan. The team said the 34-year-old agreed to a two-year deal.

"The last couple of days, it's an experience I never had in my life. I just want to thank every one of you for being here today and yesterday," he said in his opening press conference. "You showed me so much love and I never expect that reception. I'm here to win. I want to win something with this club because you guys showed me so much love and I really, really appreciate that."

Leading up to the official announcement, the club documented every step of Salah's journey to Turkey with the hashtag #SalahIsComing. They asked fans to gather at Trabzon Airport to welcome him and then held a signing ceremony. They posted videos of the airport arrival where supporters clamored against a fence and then he was welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd at Papara Park with flares and chants.

The team also posted that Salah passed his medical examination on Wednesday.

The deal comes after Trabzonspor announced they were in negotiations with Salah, as is required by Turkish law, on Tuesday and posted a video with pyramids to foreshadow his arrival. He was also reportedly courted by the Saudi Pro League and MLS.

Salah and Egypt had a historic run at this summer's World Cup. They made it to the round of 16 where they lost in a controversial match against Argentina. He powered through injury to lead Egypt to a penalty shootout win against Australia in the first knockout round and had a goal in the African team's 3-1 win over New Zealand in group play, Egypt's first World Cup victory.

After nine seasons with Liverpool, Salah is the side's third-leading scorer with 257 goals. He won the UEFA Champions League and two Premier League crowns before announcing in March that he would be leaving the club.

Trabzonspor currently is in the UEFA Europa League playoff round and also has expressed ambition to contend for the Turkish title next season after a third-place finish in the 2025-26 campaign. They signed a number of players on manager Fatih Tekke's wishlist − including Cape Verde international Sidny Lopes Cabral, who became famous for his goal against Argentina, named the best of the World Cup.
