Liverpool have been pursuing the France international, but Sky Sports report that a deal for Barcola is proving difficult for the Reds.
That could open the door for Arsenal, who are also considering alternatives after missing out on Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr.
The Independent report that Barcola is one of three names being considered by the Gunners, alongside Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez and Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye.
Arsenal could also go head-to-head with Manchester United for Inter Milan youngster Pio Esposito, The Sun claim.
The 19-year-old is regarded as one of Inter’s most promising young players and could now be at the centre of a transfer battle between two of England’s biggest clubs.

It comes as Gabriel Jesus continues to be linked with a move away from the Emirates, with Napoli keen on the striker.
Meanwhile, Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson has confirmed that Bruno Guimaraes is set to join Arsenal.
The Brazil international is closing in on a move to the Emirates after four years at St James’ Park.
Wilson stressed that selling Guimaraes was not part of Newcastle’s original plans, but the midfielder’s desire to move on ultimately played a role in the decision.
The Newcastle captain is now set to become Arsenal’s latest major signing as Arteta’s side continue to strengthen ahead of the new season.
