SOUTH AFRICAN REFUGEES’ WILD WISH LISTS
On social media, a growing number of South African refugees have shared their Amazon wish lists with the public. Many have claimed that support and friend groups have encouraged them to list their “needs” and “wants”.
While some have asked the public to assist with purchasing basic necessities to furnish their apartments and fill their grocery cupboards, others have appealed for higher-end purchases such as smart TVs, digital cameras, electric scooters, and barbecue grills costing thousands of dollars.
Spotted on the lists posted on X are also non-essential items like:
- Rhode by Hailey Bieber lip gloss set
- Ray-Ban Lenny Kravitz Aviator sunglasses
- Pro-gaming consoles, keyboards and headsets
- King-size beds
- Professional make-up kit and brush set
- Anti-ageing face creams
- Christmas tree and decorations.

The refugees have revealed that many of their items have been generously purchased for them.
Their actions have been criticised by a handful of South Africans who’ve accused them of “grifting” their adoptive country.

MORE SAFFAS FLY TO US
According to government data, close to 3 000 South African refugees flew to the US under the resettlement programme in July 2026
Since the inception of the programme last May, close to 9 000 predominantly white Afrikaners have taken up refugee status in the US.
In May 2026, President Donald Trump authorised another 10 000 places under the programme, taking the effective ceiling to 17 500 in the current fiscal year.
