Jim Harbaugh Has Superhuman Nickname for Justin Herbert

Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh has a way with words, and he’s bestowed one of his favorite phrases on star quarterback Justin Herbert.
On Monday, he put that gift of gab to use when speaking with Darren Haynes and Chris Hayre of CBS Los Angeles.

Team’s fate rests in hands of Justin Herbert
Asked about Herbert, Harbaugh didn’t hold back about what he brings to the team.
“There’s no doubt about it; everybody has seen it,” he said. “Look to the 2025 season if you have any questions, or ’24 and ’25, we’ve won zero games without Justin Herbert being the guardian of victory in every single one of those games.”
If that phrase “guardian of victory” sounds familiar, it’s because Harbaugh has used it before.

In typical Harbaugh fashion, he followed that assessment by explaining “there’s no offense, there’s no defense, it’s a we-fense.”
Harbaugh also used that term when speaking about Herbert’s play in 2024, his first season with the Chargers.
“To not put the ball in harms way, whether it’s one of the sacks or one of the hits, or when he throws to not give an opportunity for a turnover — that’s great,” he said, as reported by Alex Insdorf of Bolt Breakdowns. “That’s being a guardian of victory for the football team.”
Now, though, Harbaugh seems to suggest Herbert is doing more than just avoiding mistakes.
He detailed to Haynes and Hayre that the passer isn’t just avoiding mistakes, he’s making winning plays, similar to the way the Chargers’ defensive stars play.
“There’s times last year where he really took the team on his shoulders, so to speak,” he said. “Same way Derwin [James] does. We don’t win too many without him finishing it and doing the walk off on a bunch of those. And [Khalil Mack]. A lot of grit, a lot of investment went into last season to find a way to win those games. Like any investment … you make those investments, you want the dividend. Now’s the time to get some of those dividends back.”
