Like a lot of Canadians, Alabama Senator Katie Britt is still scratching her head, wondering how Justin Trudeau went from Canada’s prime minister to dating Katy Perry.

“Don’t you think it’s kind of odd? It’s like, he used to be in charge of a whole country, and now we sort of see him frolic,” the first-term Republican told TMZ’s Charlie Cotton recently in a social media clip that has been viewed more than 800,000 times.

As Trudeau’s personal life makes headlines thanks to his relationship with the singer, Britt is pondering how the two actually got together.
“Like how did he get with Katy Perry?” Britt asked. “That’s actually the question we should be getting to.”
Trudeau and Perry having a romantic time in Europe
Trudeau has been making headlines as he gallivants across Europe supporting his pop star girlfriend during her summer tour across the pond.
But his presence at her shows has had a mixed reception back at home.
One recent viral clip shows Trudeau , who famously banned certain single-use plastics, smiling as he drank out of a plastic cup.
“Justin Trudeau use of PLASTIC on every occasion confirms Climate Change is OVER,” one critic swiped .
Trudeau’s popularity had plummeted by the end of his tenure, and he announced his resignation as prime minister last year amid mounting political pressure and Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on Canada.
After 10 years in power, Trudeau’s approval rating had sunk to historically low levels of support for the governing Liberals.
At the end of 2024, support for Trudeau’s Liberals stood at just 16% of decided and leaning voters — the lowest level in more than a decade.
But the Liberals recovered after a wave of anti-Trump sentiment and promises of tough talk on trade helped elect Mark Carney to Canada’s highest office.
Likewise, Trudeau himself appeared to bounce back from his political troubles.
Last summer, just months after his unceremonious departure from politics, Trudeau sparked dating rumours with Perry.
I n a series of photos published by the Daily Mail last October, Perry and Trudeau were snapped nuzzling into one another and kissing aboard her 24-metre yacht, the Caravelle.
While Canadians continue to grapple with the cost of living, Trudeau and Perry have popped up at events like Coachella , the Tribeca Film Festival and the Davos Economic Forum .
Last month, Trudeau hopped around like a rabbit in a TikTok video Perry released to promote her latest single, Watch It Burn .
“Ancient texts say that if you hop to this song you will get 1,000 years of good luck,” Perry captioned the clip. But commenters quickly mocked Trudeau’s “garbage” dance moves.
More recently, the couple was pictured having some fun in the sun, frolicking on a beach in the South of France with paparazzi snapping pics of the two locking lips and sipping drinks in the Mediterranean Sea.
During one tour stop, Perry, who split from her fiance Orlando Bloom in 2025, dedicated I’m His, He’s Mine to her new beau.
“I want to dedicate this next song to my beautiful boyfriend, my wonderful partner. I love when he comes to my shows and he always makes me so happy,” Perry said .
At the premiere of her new documentary, Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour – Live from Paris , Perry called Trudeau “ the love of my life .”
Rumours have swirled that Trudeau, who split from his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau in 2023, wants Perry to live part-time with him in Montreal.
But considered alongside the many issues facing Canadians, just like Britt, we’re still wondering the same thing.
“Who introduced them?” Britt wondered. “Obviously they didn’t find each other on an app. You know? Like, how did that go down?”
