It wasn’t a bad time to spend a day out on some beach volleyball courts.
And it was all for a good cause.
To benefit the Cheboygan High School 2027 senior class’s lock-in, the school held a pair of beach volleyball tournaments on the courts of Gordon Turner Park on Sunday, Aug. 9.
“It was fun,” Cheboygan senior Nataleigh Blaisdell said. “I played beach volleyball last year once, but this was a lot better than the (tournament) last year. This one had a lot better participation and some different competitions. It brings the community together. Nobody really uses these courts, so I think we made good use of them.”
While there were Cheboygan senior class representatives like Blaisdell participating on Sunday, there were also underclassmen and adult players from Cheboygan and outside the area present, as two different tournaments – high school and adult divisions – were played.
Winning the high school title was the “Kiss My Ace” team of Nolan Schley, Diem Schley, Ava Belford and Nora Bethuy.
Meanwhile, the “Sand Storm” squad of Gavin Smith, Madison Smith, Mackenzie Stockman, Trinity Thompson and Brayden Clark won the adult division crown.
As competitive as the tournaments were, they also provided a chance for players to bond and share some laughs.
“I’ve never done this before so just coming out here and being able to compete with people – because they’re all really competitive – it was a lot of fun,” Cheboygan junior Landon Tebo said. “There was some good back-and-forth banter with the other teams and just keeping it positive. It was a great experience for the first time.”
During the tournament, there was also a bake sale held with proceeds going to Cheboygan’s upcoming senior class and its lock-in event, which happens in the spring.
With the start of the 2026-27 school year right around the corner, the beach volleyball event was a great way for many to communicate, especially with some not seeing each other as much during the summer.
For Tebo, he said it’s almost like a first send-off for this year’s seniors.
“It’s like setting the tone for the rest of their year, and setting the tone for us next year, because we’ve got to raise the bar now since we’re juniors who are going to be seniors next year,” Tebo said.
