Opta’s supercomputer predicts Wrexham’s chances of securing Championship play-off spot in 26/27

Wrexham are less than one week away from getting their 2026/27 Championship season underway.
The Red Dragons suffered disappointment last term as they failed to beat Middlesbrough on the final day of the campaign and ended up finishing seventh (one spot outside of the play-offs).

However, the EFL have now expanded the play-offs to six teams, meaning teams that finish between third and eighth will secure a play-off spot and in turn, a chance at promotion to the Premier League.
This, as expected, has increased Wrexham’s chances of ending the forthcoming season in the play-offs.

With the Championship season getting underway later this week, Opta have released their predictions for the season.
Their supercomputer claims that had the old play-off model still been in place, Phil Parkinson’s side would have had a 26.2% chance of finishing in the top six.
However, they are now given a 35.8% chance of finishing in the top eight of England’s second tier this season.
Elsewhere, West Ham United are the team most likely to win automatic promotion to the Premier League (29.4%), followed by Southampton (23.7%) and Middlesbrough (21.0%).
Wrexham and Middlesbrough have already faced off this season, with the latter securing a 1-0 win in the Carabao Cup.
Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s side are now due to take on Welsh rivals Cardiff City in their first league game of the campaign on Monday, August 17.
That match will be held at the Cardiff City Stadium. It kicks off at 8pm BST and will be the first league meeting between the two teams since 2002, when The Bluebirds won 3-2.
