Durban water supply hit by major pipeline leak after planned repairs

· The South African

Residents and businesses across parts of Durban and the surrounding areas are facing continued water supply reductions after a severe leak developed on the Southern Aqueduct pipeline during efforts to restore the system.

The latest setback comes just one day after the planned shutdown of the pipeline as part of the Southern Aqueduct Upgrade Project.

The eThekwini Municipality said the leak developed on 20 August 2026 while the Prestressed Concrete Pipeline (PCP) was being charged following the completion of planned work.

Severe leak forces another water shutdown

The leak occurred at Work Package 6 on Northbourne Road in Westville while technical teams were charging the PCP line.

Due to the severity of the leak, the technical teams were forced to shut down and isolate the pipeline again overnight so that repairs could begin safely.

The extent of the leak prevented the continued charging of the PCP line.

As a result, the reduction in water supply to affected areas remains in place until further notice.

The municipality said technical teams are currently attending to the repairs and will provide further updates once the situation has been assessed.
