IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa told those at the event that the cohort of those the party is welcoming consists of former members of the IFP who left the party years ago.
“Today marks an important moment for the Inkatha Freedom Party as we officially welcome members of the National Freedom Party into the IFP family. These are no strangers to us. These are our former comrades, and today we are reuniting and rebuilding together,” said Hlabisa.
Senior leaders of the NFP jump ship
The group includes several senior NFP leaders, including eDumbe Local Municipality mayor Cllr Sbusiso Mkhabela, who also served as the NFP’s national chairperson, and NFP secretary-general Teddy Thwala. NFP councillors in Abaqulusi Local Municipality are also part of the group.
“These leaders bring with them valuable political and local government experience. They have served in different structures and understand the challenges facing our communities and municipalities.
“Their experience, knowledge and commitment will add significant strength to the IFP as we prepare for the 2026 Local Government Elections,” he said.
Preparations for the elections
Hlabisa said the arrival of these new members is a significant development for the IFP.
“It demonstrates growing confidence in the Party’s principled leadership, political direction and vision for a stable, prosperous and united South Africa,” said Hlabisa.
He said the groups decision do rejoin the IFP also speaks to the Party’s growing appeal and its ability to bring people together around a common vision for better governance and stronger communities.
“At a time of political uncertainty, the IFP remains a beacon of stability, unity, discipline and good governance. We have remained consistent in our principles, and we will continue to put the interests of communities first,” he said.
Hlabisa said IFP enters this election period with confidence, determination and purpose.
“We are fully in election mode,” he said.
He said the next four weeks the party will launch its Local Government Elections Manifesto at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu.
“This manifesto will set out the IFP’s vision and programme for municipalities and communities across the country. We will present a clear alternative based on ethical leadership, accountable government, effective service delivery and respect for our communities,” he said.
