Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has highlighted another significant religious and cultural landmark in the state under the Maharashtra Shivdhara initiative. Sharing a post on social media, Fadnavis described the ancient Harihareshwar Shiva Temple in Raigad district as “South Kashi”, drawing attention to its spiritual significance and scenic coastal setting.

In his post, Fadnavis praised the temple's architectural and cultural splendour, describing Harihareshwar as a place where natural beauty and spirituality come together. He also emphasised the importance of connecting younger generations with Maharashtra's rich cultural heritage.

What is special about Harihareshwar Temple?

Harihareshwar is located in the coastal Raigad district. It is an important pilgrimage destination dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is surrounded by the Arabian Sea and is known for its tranquil setting, historic significance and distinctive temple architecture.

The shrine is traditionally associated with Lord Shiva and is revered by devotees from Maharashtra and other parts of India. Harihareshwar is also often referred to as “Devghar”, or the home of the gods, because of its religious importance.

The temple complex is situated close to the popular Harihareshwar beach. It allows visitors to experience both the spiritual and natural attractions of the Konkan region. The rocky coastline, greenery and sea-facing landscape add to the area's appeal.

Maharashtra Shivdhara Initiative

Fadnavis' post is part of the Maharashtra government's effort to showcase the state's important religious and cultural heritage sites. Through the Maharashtra Shivdhara initiative, several historically and spiritually significant Shiva temples are being brought into focus. His initiative comes during the time of the holy month of Shravan, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Before highlighting Harihareshwar Temple in Raigad, Fadnavis had shared two other prominent temples as part of the series. The first was the Marleshwar Shiva Temple in Ratnagiri, which he described as a religious and historical heritage site surrounded by natural beauty.

The second temple featured was the Kunkeshwar Shiva Temple in Sindhudurg, which Fadnavis described as “Konkan's Kashi.”
