Patriots exec breaks silence on Christian Gonzalez contract situation

New England Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf has been hard at work behind the scenes negotiating a contract extension for star cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

The two sides still haven't agreed on a long-term deal, and Gonzalez hasn't practiced in nearly two weeks.

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel has said Gonzalez is dealing with something physical, which could be an injury that he sustained during team drills at training camp practice. However, as more time passes with no Gonzalez, many are left to wonder whether it could be contract-related.

"Each side is trying to do what's right for them," Wolf told Devin and Jason McCourty, via ESPN's Mike Reiss. "Christian is a tremendous player that we've been on record multiple times saying we want him to be here, and that hasn't changed. We're going to continue working with his representation to try to get something done."

The baseline has already been set with the Seattle Seahawks signing All-Pro cornerback Devon Witherspoon to a four-year, $132 million deal with $101 million guaranteed.

So what's the hold-up with Gonzalez?

That's the biggest question that continues to go unanswered. With the season rapidly approaching, the urgency to get a deal done should only increase.
