South Africa’s dams are in good shape, except in one province

Nationally, South Africa’s dams are in good shape. But in the Western Cape, the picture looks nothing like the rest of the country.
Why one province is the clear outlier
As of early August, South Africa’s dams sat at an average of 95.9% full nationally, according to the Department of Water and Sanitation.

Several provinces are comfortably above that mark: North West leads at 102.4%, with Free State (100.2%), Limpopo (98.9%), Mpumalanga (98.4%), and Gauteng (98.1%) all close behind.
The Western Cape sits at the bottom of the table by a wide margin, at just 79.6%, and more recent reporting shows that gap has only grown since.
The gap that’s widened week by week
By 19 August, provincial dams had slipped to around 77%, compared to roughly 90% at the same time last year, according to EWN.
The Western Cape’s Department of Water and Sanitation says the situation “remains manageable” and that water restrictions aren’t on the table yet, even as the numbers keep sliding week on week.
What’s actually driving the drop
The shortfall traces back to rainfall, not just consumption.
Cape Town has received noticeably less rain than usual over the past three months compared to the same period last year, a deficit tracked independently by Cape Town-focused water dashboards monitoring the city’s six-dam supply system.
Add a strengthening El Niño into that mix, a pattern already flagged for pushing temperatures up and drying out other parts of the country, and the Western Cape’s rainfall shortfall starts to look less like a blip and more like part of a bigger seasonal pattern.
It’s hectic seeing one province’s numbers slide while the rest of the country’s dams are practically overflowing, hey.
