Another Zim duo arrested in Botswana over suspected stolen copper

Two more Zimbabwean nationals have been arrested in Botswana, this time over the alleged possession of suspected stolen copper cables worth more than P16 000 (about R19 000).
The latest arrests come just days after two other Zimbabweans were detained in Botswana in connection with an alleged P375 000 (R446 500) robbery in Maun, highlighting a series of cases involving Zimbabwean nationals being processed by Botswana authorities.

Two Zimbabweans arrested with copper cables
The Botswana Police Service (BPS) identified the latest suspects as Vusimusi Mhlanga, 29, and Philani Tshuma, 36.
According to police, the pair were intercepted during a stop-and-search operation along the A1 Road near Mmamashia on the night of 19 August 2026.
Officers searched their vehicle and allegedly recovered concealed, burnt copper cables valued at more than P16 000.
The suspects appeared before the Broadhurst Magistrates’ Court on 25 August, facing two counts relating to being found in possession of suspected stolen property and entering Botswana through an ungazetted point of entry.
They were remanded in prison and are expected to return to court on 8 September 2026.
Botswana warns over copper cable theft
The BPS warned that the theft and illegal possession of copper cables can have wider consequences for communities and businesses.
Police said such criminal activity can disrupt electricity supplies, damage critical infrastructure, affect businesses and households, and undermine economic activity.
The service urged members of the public to report suspicious activities involving the theft, transportation or sale of copper cables.
