John Middlekauff Expects Consequences for Niners Owner Jed York
York, the team’s principal owner, pleaded no contest to misdemeanour charges in Ohio after being arrested in a prostitution-related case. The NFL has said it will review the matter under its personal conduct policy, leaving York facing the possibility of discipline from the league.
Former Philadelphia Eagles scout John Middlekauff believes the NFL will act soon.
“I can’t believe a sober human being would attempt that,” Middlekauff said. “The problem with that argument is it was 9:35 in the morning.“
York was arrested Sunday at 9:35 a.m. at the Wheat Hill Mobile Home Community in East Palestine, Ohio. According to court records, authorities said York responded to an undercover advertisement on a prostitution website and arranged to meet a woman for sexual activity in exchange for $140.
He arrived at the meeting location with the cellphone used to arrange the meeting and was arrested by East Palestine police, who were assisting the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force.
The original charge of engaging in prostitution was later amended to disorderly conduct as part of a plea agreement. York also pleaded no contest to possessing criminal tools. He was fined $1,150 and sentenced to one day in jail on each charge, with the days already considered served. He posted a $5,000 bond and was released on his own recognizance.
The legal case is now resolved. The NFL matter is not.
The league said Monday that it’s “aware of the matter which will be reviewed under the personal conduct policy.” The policy applies to owners and other club and league personnel, not just players, and gives commissioner Roger Goodell the authority to impose discipline when warranted.
For Middlekauff, the situation is difficult to separate from the position York holds.
“One of the most embarrassing moments I ever remember in the history of the NFL,” he said. “To have a guy that runs one of the most prominent franchises in American sports get arrested for a sting in a trailer park, soliciting; the league is going to suspend.”
The league’s policy specifically says owners and club or league management have traditionally been held to a higher standard and can face more discipline when violations occur. It also says conduct that is illegal or irresponsible can damage the reputation of others associated with the game and weaken public confidence in the NFL.
That does not guarantee a suspension for York. The NFL has taken different approaches in past cases involving owners.
