Latest adjustment to SASSA Childcare Grants in September 2026

· The South African

SASSA Childcare Grants in September 2026 will be paid this coming week, on Friday, 4 September.

While at the heart of constant controversy, few realise it is a one-of-a-kind social-welfare system on the African continent. R580 in Child Support goes to 13-million recipients each and every month.

While other core Childcare beneficiaries include Foster Child and Care Dependency, which technically qualifies as disability for under 18s.

Better still, independent researchers have long credited the welfare programme for staving off issues like malnutrition and growth deformities in young children.

As such, what are the latest adjustments to South African Social Security Agency

Childcare grants? Well, encouragingly, the gap between payments is shorter 0 28 days versus last month’s 33 days. Grant amounts are unchanged from the increases approved back in April 2026:

  • Child Support pays R580, up by R20 from R560 back in April 2026
  • Foster Child pays R1 290, up by R40 from R1 250 back in April 2026
  • Care Dependency pays R2 400 up by R80 from R2 320 back in April 2026

First-time applicants for SASSA Childcare Grants in September 2026 should take note of the amended income eligibility requirements.

Previously, a single caregiver on Child Support could earn R5 100 per month and still qualify. Now that limit has increased to R5 800. While, for married couples looking after a minor, the figure increases from R10 200 to R11 600 per month.

Tallied up per year, that’s R69 600 (single person) and R139 200 (couple). Note that there is no asset portion to a Childcare Grant, like the agency insists for SASSA Older Person Grants. And both Foster Child and Care Dependency require additional permissions from courts and doctors, respectively, before approval.

From a practical point of view, SASSA Childcare Grants in September 2026 can be processed and approved same day. Previously, the waiting period was closer to three months. However, if you have all your documents in order on your first visit, you could walk away with an approved grant right there and then. Bonus!
