Report: Mariners Calling Up Lazaro Montes

The Seattle Mariners are calling up outfield prospect Lázaro Montes, according to MLB insider Francys Romero. He is expected to join the team when rosters expand to 28 players on Tuesday. The 21-year-old Montes ranks as the Mariners’ No. 5 prospect and No. 56 overall, per MLB Pipeline. He is one of several American League prospects hoping to impact his team’s playoff push.

Montes, a native of Cuba, signed with the Mariners in 2022 as an international free agent. His biggest asset is his power, and he has a frame tailor-made for it. Standing at 6’5″ and 210 lbs, Montes has 114 home runs across five minor league seasons. That power has come to the forefront in the last two seasons. Montes hit 32 homers between High-A and Double-A last season, and 38 homers between Double-A and Triple-A this season. The 38 blasts rank second in all of Minor League Baseball, trailing only Milwaukee Brewers prospect Andrew Fischer (42).

Montes entered the season as one of seven Mariners prospects in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100. After getting at-bats with the Mariners in spring training, he has continued his power surge in the minor leagues. In 2026, Montes has a slash line of .247/.365/.556 with 96 RBI, 97 runs scored, and 23 doubles in 122 games.
Although he is listed as an outfielder, scouts have suggested he may end up as a primary designated hitter in the long term thanks to what he brings at the plate.
The Last Word
The Mariners are not out of the Wild Card race yet, currently standing five games out of the third and final spot. Calling up a big bat like Lázaro Montes could help them make a last-ditch run at October. However, from the Mariners’ perspective, it’s more likely this move stems from rewarding one of their top minor league hitters for his strong power numbers, and taking advantage of September roster expansions in order to see what they have in some of their top prospects. Even if the Mariners ultimately miss the postseason, Montes joining the roster could fill more seats and draw more eyeballs in Seattle.
