September is here, which means the start of the 2026-27 NHL season is officially on the horizon.

For the Colorado Avalanche, the next few weeks will be busy.

Visit michezonews.co.za for more information.

Rookies will get their first taste of preseason action, veterans will begin returning to the ice in a more formal setting, training camp will open at Family Sports and, before long, the Avalanche will be back at Ball Arena for the start of another regular season.

Here are the key dates to keep an eye on leading up to opening night on Sept. 30. Some of these dates have already been confirmed by the organization, while others are an expectation for what’s to come.

Saturday, Sept. 12 & Sunday, Sept. 13 — Rookie Faceoff

The Avalanche rookies will take part in the Rookie Faceoff, with games against the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks. The tournament will be hosted by the San Jose Sharks.

It will be the first opportunity to see some of Colorado’s younger players in game action before training camp gets underway.

Monday, Sept. 14 — Charity Golf Classic

The Avalanche are expected to host their annual charity golf classic in Castle Pines.

The event is often one of the first opportunities for members of the veteran roster to meet with the media ahead of the new season.

Sept. 15 or 16 — Media Day

The Avalanche are expected to hold their annual media day on either Sept. 15 or 16. We should get confirmation from the team soon. Traditionally, media day is a day before training camp opens, which makes the 16th more likely.

As usual, the day should feature press conferences with head coach Jared Bednar, captain Gabe Landeskog, superstar forward Nathan MacKinnon and other key members of the roster.

Sept. 17-19 — Training Camp

The Avalanche are expected to open training camp at Family Sports during this three-day window.

This is when the competition for roster spots and lineup positions begins to take shape, with the veterans joining the rookies and younger players looking to make an impression. This year’s camp and preseason will be shortened for the first time under the league’s new collective bargaining agreement. Because of that, it’ll be interesting to see how many players are invited to this.

Sept. 20 — Preseason Opener

The Avalanche will open their four-game preseason schedule at Ball Arena against the Utah Mammoth.

Sept. 21 — First Preseason Road Game

Colorado will head north of the border for its first preseason road game, taking on the Winnipeg Jets.

Sept. 25 — Final Preseason Home Game

The Avalanche will return to Ball Arena for their final preseason home game against the Winnipeg Jets.

Sept. 26 — Preseason Finale

Colorado will wrap up its preseason schedule on the road against the Utah Mammoth.

Sept. 30 — Regular-Season Opener

The Avalanche will open the 2026-27 regular season at Ball Arena against the Los Angeles Kings.
