Eskom announces a 14-hour power outage in Limpopo on Sunday
· The South African

Eskom has confirmed a lengthy electricity supply interruption affecting several communities in the Vhembe region of Limpopo this weekend, as the utility carries out planned maintenance work on two key substations.
According to a notice issued by Eskom’s LimLanga Cluster Communication and Stakeholder Management team, the interruption forms part of scheduled maintenance on the Muledane and Thohoyandou substations. The outage will last 14 hours, from 6:00 to 20:00 on Sunday, 6 September 2026. Eskom says the work is necessary to improve the reliability of the electricity network in the area, though it acknowledged the inconvenience this will cause to affected households and businesses.

The power cut is expected to hit a long list of communities across the Thohoyandou area. These include Tshakhuma, Lwamondo, Shayandima, Muledane, Tshisaulu, Itsani, Tshifulanani, Hamutsha, Tsianda, Dzwerani, Duthuni, Tswinga and Phiphidi. Also affected will be Maungani, Tshikunda, Lunungwi, Gondeni, Tshilapfene, Mukumbani, Ha Ragali, Tshiungululu, and Ngwenani, covering both the Themeli and Mapholi sections. The list extends further to Sibasa, Ngovhela, Tshilungoma, Makwarela Extension 3, and the Thohoyandou central business district, including Thavhani Mall. Residents in Thohoyandou Block F and G, Thohoyandou P-West and East, Miluwani and Univen will also experience the power cut for the full 14-hour window.
Given the scale of the affected zone, residents are being encouraged to plan ahead, particularly for water supply, food storage and any activities that depend on electricity throughout the day.
Safety warning and how to get help
Eskom has urged customers to treat all electrical appliances and wiring as live at all times during the interruption, warning that power could be restored without notice before the scheduled end time. The utility said this precaution is essential to prevent injury or damage once supply resumes.
