Girls tennis: Lady Dees beat the Mustangs in the heat

Following the conclusion of the final match in Thursday's South Central Conference girls tennis dual between the Albia and Davis County, the Mustang senior looked over in amazement following a 7-5 win with Kolbi Haskell in the No. 1 singles match.
One of Robinson's opponents, Mollie McAninch, played the entire match in blue jeans. It was an unusual uniform choice considering the near triple-digit temperatures that had southern Iowa in the grip of a week-long heat wave.
"She didn't even look like she was sweating out there," Davis County head girls tennis coach Tucker Henderson said. "I know I would have been. I seen guys play in Hey Dudes (casual shoes), but nothing like that."
The Albia junior played hard after working hard off the court on Thursday, keeping her blue jeans on after making the trip to Bloomfield after a morning filled working on houses. The future Indian Hills student is planning to earn a degree in construction.
"We were on the way over to the meet and I just felt more comfortable in my blue jeans, so I thought I'd wear them for at least one match," McAninch said. "Once I won my first match, I decided to keep them on.
"I love my blue-collar life."
McAninch's 6-0 win over Haskell in the No. 2 match helped the Lady Dees complete a singles sweep against the Mustangs. Alexis Rominger, Koltin Wynn and Marlie Conley combined to win 18 of 20 games for the Lady Dees while Eve Harlan and Amelia Seddon pulled out tough wins with Seddon edging Robinson, 7-5, in the top singles match.
"It was a long week for us. We had three matches in four days," Albia head girls tennis coach Savannah Wallace said. "We're exhausted. We're hot. We just tried to counter that by having some fun out there and keep everyone happy. Most of these girls enjoy the sport, but they really enjoy being around each other."
Albia (3-4, 2-2 SCC) heads to Ottumwa on Tuesday to face the Bulldogs at Dan Staggs Tennis Courts. Davis County (3-5, 2-2 SCC) hosts Clarke in conference action on Tuesday.
