I was just sitting on my porch thinking about how fast time flies. It feels like just yesterday we were worrying about last season’s injuries. Now, we are already looking at the new calendar and dreaming of wins.
Big Rivalries and Emotional Returns
The season starts with a bang on October 21 against the Orlando Magic. This game is more than just a season opener. Per Peachtree Hoops, there is a lot of tension between these two teams.
The Magic have caused some real trouble for Atlanta lately. Two years ago, they caused injuries to Vit Krejci and Larry Nance Jr. in a single game. That was just the start of the mess. Last season, the Hawks actually swept Orlando, but the Magic also managed to sideline Jock Landale. He missed the rest of that season and the playoffs because of an injury. You can just feel that bad blood between these squads.
Then we have November 6, which is going to be a real tear-jerker. The Hawks play the Washington Wizards, and it marks the official return of Trae Young against his old team. Even though he got a video tribute last season, he could not play because he was hurt. Now, he will be healthy and ready to show them what they are missing.
The NBA Cup games also start around this time, so these games carry extra weight. I can already see the energy in the arena when Trae steps onto that floor.
Tough Tests in the West and New York
The schedule gets even tougher when we head out west. On November 18, the Hawks travel to face the Oklahoma City Thunder. This is a big test because the Thunder are one of the best teams in the Western Conference.
It will be a bit of a reunion, too. Lu Dort and Aaron Wiggins are both back in Atlanta after being traded from the Thunder this past offseason. They helped OKC win a championship two seasons ago. They might even get their own video tributes during this game. The Hawks have played OKC close on the road for two years, but they just cannot finish them off. It would be so sweet to see them finally get a win there.
Finally, mark November 29 on your calendar. The Hawks head to New York to face the Knicks just two days after Thanksgiving. The first time we see them since the first round of the playoffs should be something special. The Knicks have not changed much with their roster, so we know exactly what is coming.
