Maryland shuts out Hampton 62-0 in Pirates' first Power 4 matchup

Hampton got its first taste of Power 4 competition Saturday, and Maryland quickly showed why it was the favorite.

The Terrapins scored on six of eight first-half possessions, built a 34-0 halftime lead and rolled past the Pirates 62-0 at SECU Stadium.
Hampton (1-1) opened the season with a 45-0 victory over Virginia University-Lynchburg but couldn't generate the same offensive production against Maryland (1-0). The Pirates managed 85 total yards, including 45 in the first half, while the Terrapins finished with 646 yards.
Hampton's defense forced a three-and-out on Maryland's opening possession, but the Pirates couldn't capitalize.
Maryland's Dewan Williams changed the game on the Terrapins' next possession, breaking a tackle and sprinting 94 yards down the sideline for a touchdown with 9:30 left in the first quarter. The run was the second-longest in Maryland history.
Hampton's next possession ended with a 55-yard punt by Brett Starling that was returned to the Pirates' 36-yard line. Maryland needed five plays to reach the end zone, with Williams scoring on an 8-yard run to make it 14-0 with 4:43 left in the quarter.
The Terrapins added a 26-yard field goal after intercepting Woods and returning the ball to the Hampton 7. Hampton's defense held Maryland out of the end zone, but the kick extended the lead to 17-0 with 1:28 remaining in the first.
Maryland added another field goal early in the second quarter after the Pirates again forced the Terrapins to settle for three points. The 36-yard kick made it 20-0 with 12:32 left in the half.
Iverson Howard then scored on an 11-yard touchdown run with 5:54 remaining, and Malik Washington connected with Abdul-Rahim Gladding on a 10-yard touchdown pass with six seconds left before halftime.
Maryland added three touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 55-0 lead before scoring again in the fourth.
The loss marked Hampton's first game against a Power 4 opponent, but more such matchups are ahead. The Pirates are scheduled to face Georgia Tech in 2027, Old Dominion in 2028 and Virginia in 2029.
