Spurs Ideal Midseason Roster Addition Revealed

Heading into the 2026-27 NBA season, the San Antonio Spurs have 14 players signed to standard contracts, plus their three two-way players. Taelon Peter was signed to a training camp deal, and unless he shows out before October, expect him to play elsewhere next season.

The Spurs can head into the season with only 14 players on the roster, although that does leave them at a rather obvious disadvantage. Teams that exceed the salary cap, first apron, and second apron all have to pay varying luxury taxes. The Spurs are in danger of moving up to the next tax bracket, and with payments based on the opening night roster, the team can wait for the season to start before filling that last spot.

The Spurs have plenty of depth in the backcourt and on the wings. Even after adding Tarris Reed and having Luke Kornet return, the Spurs could use some help down low behind Victor Wembanyama. They're expected to bring back a familiar face.

Spurs Expected to Re-Sign Kelly Olynyk

This summer, as Wembanyama and the Spurs went to France to train and bond, Kelly Olynyk went with them. It drew some attention because he technically isn't on the roster, as his contract has expired.

However, he's managed to secure a spot within the Spurs' brotherhood.

Last season, his first in San Antonio, Olynyk averaged 3.2 points and 1.2 rebounds, playing almost entirely in garbage time. He arrived in San Antonio in the trade that sent Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley to the Washington Wizards. A 13-year NBA veteran, he's still searching for his first title.

Apparently, the Spurs want him to run it back as a depth piece.

"They're about $2 million from the luxury tax," outlined ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel. "So they could wait until sometime in the season to sign Olynyk to a prorated contract if they wanted to. He's been hanging out in San Antonio. He's done workouts with some of those guys. So it wouldn't shock me if he stayed there and went back, especially because he was a good locker room presence, a good veteran guy for a team that just came off an NBA Finals run."

Now, that's not to say that Olynyk will be a core rotation player.

Last season, he played in only 42 games, playing for ten or more minutes in only 16 of those appearances. With Kornet, Reed, and maybe a healthy Jayden Quaintance on the roster, expect his minutes to be even more limited.

Between Olynyk and Harrison Barnes, though, the Spurs clearly value their veterans, and on a young roster, their leadership can go a long way.
