“Big Step Back” – Chris Wilder Brutally Honest After Canaries Defeat Blades
· Yahoo Sports
Sheffield United suffered their first defeat of the Championship campaign on Saturday afternoon as Norwich City ran out 3-1 winners at Bramall Lane.
The Blades had made an unbeaten start to the new season, but were ultimately undone by a combination of defensive mistakes and a strong second-half showing from the visitors.

Norwich patiently shifted possession across the edge of the United penalty area in the opening stages before finding the breakthrough. Brooks and Pelle Mattsson combined to create an opening for Anthony Musaba, who made no mistake when the ball arrived at his feet. The Norwich attacker curled a superb right-footed effort into the top corner, giving Michael Cooper no chance.
United responded well, though, and did not have to wait long to restore parity.
On 23 minutes, Tyrese Campbell helped create the opening before Brereton Diaz’s ball found Patrick Bamford in a promising position. The experienced striker showed his quality, keeping his composure before producing a precise left-footed finish to make it 1-1.
With the game finely balanced, both sides appeared capable of taking control, but it was Norwich who struck the next blow. Just before half-time, former Sheffield United man Slimane produced a flick to send the ball into the path of Mo Toure. The forward broke away from the United defence before calmly finding the back of the net to put Norwich back in front.
Toure was subsequently booked for his celebrations, with the visitors taking a 2-1 lead into the interval.
United continued to search for another way back into the contest after the restart, but Norwich eventually delivered the decisive blow through a substitute. Kvistgaarden had barely been introduced when he reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the United penalty area and fired past Cooper to give the visitors a two-goal cushion.

Wilder was frustrated by the manner in which his side conceded, particularly the second goal, which he felt changed the flow of the game.
“Three goals that we’ve conceded. The second goal really changed the flow of the game,” Wilder said to BBC Radio Sheffield.
“We recovered pretty well. We didn’t get the detail right on the first goal. But it was going to be a tough afternoon because it always is when you play Norwich. It’s always close affairs as we know.”
The Blades boss admitted United had not done enough to merit taking anything from the game, despite their positive spells.
“We’re disappointed because for the majority of those challenges we’ve had against them we come out on top, but we didn’t deserve to come out on top today,” he added.
“So the second goal for me is the real turning point because, as I said, we wrestle it back, we scored a fabulous goal ourselves, we’ve got into the ascendancy, we’re on the front foot.
“Let’s get to half-time. You just want to make sure we don’t change the feel and the atmosphere of everything, whether it’s at Bramall Lane or wherever it is.”
Wilder was particularly critical of the defending for Toure’s goal, insisting United needed to react better to the second ball and track the forward’s run. “We’ve not dropped on the second ball and we have to do better with the run and see the run out,” he said.
“I feel for Michael [Cooper] because he’s been outstanding and it looks as if, you know, 3-1 today.”
The Sheffield United manager also believed Norwich’s third goal should not have stood, claiming Kvistgaarden was in an offside position. “The third goal is offside, you know it’s offside,” Wilder said. “I’m not saying that was the reason that we’ve lost the game, but still it’s an offside decision.”
Sheffield United Took A “Big Step Back” At the Weekend
However, Wilder refused to use the decision as an excuse for the defeat and instead turned his attention to his team’s response in the closing stages.
“I didn’t like the last 20 minutes; we felt sorry for ourselves,” he admitted. “Obviously we’ve got some players missing so it’s not a lot of options to change it around, but we’ve just got to battle on to the international break. We’ve got three games left and a cup game.”
Ultimately, Wilder felt this was a significant setback for his side, particularly given the way they performed in the latter stages. “It’s a big step backward for me today because I didn’t, and I definitely understand that the supporters didn’t enjoy the last 25 minutes,” he said. “For half an hour it was far too comfortable for them and that really irritated me.”
The Blades will now focus on getting it right ready for the upcoming midweek fixture away at Blackburn Rovers.
