The Green Bay Packers are preparing to give MarShawn Lloyd his first opportunity to open a season as an NFL starter. With Josh Jacobs on the Commissioner’s Exempt List following an alleged domestic violence incident, Lloyd has a chance to show he can handle a larger role in Green Bay’s backfield.

Lloyd is ready to take advantage of his increased role when the Packers face the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1. The 25-year-old running back spoke with reporters Monday and made it clear he is eager to show what he can do against the Vikings. The matchup will give Lloyd an early chance to establish himself in the Packers’ backfield.

“A lot of players don’t know me,” commented the Packers running back.

“They’ll watch my college tape, if anything. They won’t even know anything about me, won’t even worry about me. But they will eventually, at some point this year. So, I just gotta keep [keeping] my head down and working. That’s the biggest thing.”

MarShawn Lloyd’s chance to shine for the Packers

Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd (32) participates in drills during the third day of training camp on July 25, 2025, at Ray Nitschke Field in Ashwaubenon, Wis.

With the Packers needing more from their running game, MarShawn Lloyd could have an early opportunity to show what he brings to the offense.

The three-year veteran spent most of his NFL career on the sidelines, giving him limited chances to establish himself since entering the league. This season could provide the first real look at what he can do with consistent opportunities.

Before transferring to USC, Lloyd spent two seasons at South Carolina. He then posted 870 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in 11 games for the Trojans in 2023, adding 232 receiving yards. He is expected to open 2026 as the Packers’ lead back.
