Commanders P Tress Way says 2026 ‘most likely’ his last NFL season

· Yahoo Sports

Tress Way has been an institution in Washington for more than a decade. The Commanders claimed him off waivers back in 2024 and he has been their punter ever since, with a sterling track record that included three Pro Bowl selections.

That time playing for the Burgundy and Gold, or for anyone else, may be coming to an end.

The 36-year-old told on-site reporters on Thursday afternoon that 2026 may be his final season. While he’s old by NFL player standard, Way remains at the top of his game and one of the best punters in the league.

Way also said that he informed Commanders general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn that he’s strongly considering retirement.

He was clearly in a reflective mood during his Thursday meeting with media discussing the prospect of hangin’ em up.

“The Pro Bowls are sweet. That’ll be — having that the rest of my life – the few jersey hanging up will be really special for me,” Way said to reporters, with video from NBC4’s JP Finlay. “This year, too, is special because I’m pretty sure this is my last season.

“I talked with AP and DQ and gave them a head’s up. I didn’t want to spring that on them. It’s one of those – I’m just taking it all in. I feel like someone’s cutting onions all the time around here.”

Way is a fan favorite for his special team ability and for his welcoming personality to the fan base, so even the thought of having to replace him will hit hard.

It’s going to hit hard in the locker room to possibly lose the team’s longest-tenured player, as you can see here:
