Cops hunt stabbing suspect in Deep River

OTTAWA — Residents of a town northwest of Ottawa remain locked in their homes as police spent the night searching for a knife-wielding suspect.
The drama began on Wednesday in Deep River, a community on the Ottawa River about 200km northwest of the nation’s capital and just down the road from Garrison Petawawa, following a suspected stabbing at around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
“Members of the Deep River Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are working to locate the suspect involved,” read a notice posted just after 2 a.m. on the Deep River Police Service’s Facebook page .
“At this time, the suspect has not been arrested. Members of the public are asked to remain indoors, secure their doors and windows and avoid the area while the investigation continues.”
In a post on their social media channels, the OPP said the investigation is centred around the area of McElligott Dr. within the town limits.
Schools, businesses closed
OPP officers are on scene assisting Deep River Police Service with an active investigation. Residents in the immediate area are asked to stay indoors, keep doors and windows locked, and avoid the area until further notice.
As a result of the lockdown order, schools in the area are closed, as is school bus service.
No photos or description of the suspect have yet been released by police.
On Facebook, several stores and businesses in the town have closed up shop, and a number of activities planned for Thursday have been cancelled.
Deep River’s hospital remains open, but at reduced service, with non-essential employees being sent home and non-essential appointments rescheduled.
The hospital’s emergency room will remain open, but urges only those with life-threatening injuries or the need for emergency care to attend.
