Tiafoe took the opening set 6-4 but could not hold off Shelton, who fought back to win 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 and reach his first Grand Slam final.
The defeat was particularly painful for Tiafoe, who has now lost all three of his US Open semi-final appearances. Cameras captured the 28-year-old covering his face with a towel as he made his way through the tunnel.

The final point added to the frustration, with Tiafoe’s second double fault of the match handing Shelton victory. The two Americans embraced at the net before Tiafoe walked away visibly emotional.
Some fans felt the cameras should have given Tiafoe more privacy during such a difficult moment, while others were far less sympathetic about his reaction.
One supporter wrote: “We gotta stop with the hallway camera. Let players have their privacy.”
Another added: “he played so well, so much heart, we love you big foe”
There was also plenty of encouragement for Tiafoe despite the result.
“Tough for him, but he has to hold his head high. If he plays the way he played this tournament, a slam is in his near future.”
“We’re proud of you for making it so far.”
However, not everyone was willing to defend the American, with one fan writing: “shouldn’t have played like **** if you were going to cry after losing the match don’t ever let this crybaby bum nowhere near a slam quarterfinals ever again”
Another supporter questioned whether pressure had once again played a role: “Once again his head couldn’t keep up with the pressure…🤷🏻♂️”
“So heart broken!! HE PLAYED A GOOD ONE…..”
One final reaction summed up the disappointment surrounding another missed opportunity:
“Gotta feel for Foe. This was definitely his best opportunity to make the final at the US Open. I don’t think he will have another opportunity like this again sadly 😔”
Tiafoe will leave New York with a career-high No.8 ranking, while Shelton moves up to No.4 and will face Alexander Zverev in Sunday’s final.
