San Diego State football is due for a California derby when they take on the UCLA Bruins in enemy territory. Head coach Sean Lewis is embracing the challenge in WWE style ahead of the Week 2 clash.
Lewis has started the eighth year of his head coaching career, his third with the Aztecs. He is coming off a strong 2025 campaign with the program, seeking to build on that success this year.
Lewis spoke with media ahead of the matchup this week. There, he expressed in his press conference that he is ready for whatever the Bruins throw at the Aztecs. He even went all the way by pointing out the resources their opponents have at their disposal.

“Plenty of experience where there’s a galaxy of stars and talents on the other sideline, and I’ll take me and mine against them. All their polos, all their khakis, all their resources, all that. Put the ball down. Let’s go play,” Lewis said.

What lies ahead for Sean Lewis, San Diego State this season
Sean Lewis is sending a clear message to UCLA that San Diego State has prepared and will fight them head on. California fans should be in for a frenzy between these two sides.
Lewis has had mixed results with the program two years in, having a 12-13 record. Starting out slow with a 3-9 record in 2024, he rebounded with a 9-4 display the following year. The Aztecs shined as one of the best Mountain West teams, securing bowl eligibility in the process.
San Diego State picked up where it left off last year by beating down Portland State in a 53-20 blowout. The offense was rolling throughout the course of the game, creating important momentum ahead of the UCLA contest.
The Aztecs will be on the road to face the Bruins for the in-state rivalry clash. That matchup commences on Sept. 12 at 7:15 p.m. ET.
