Bengal to shut 252 madrasas for allegedly violating regulations

The West Bengal government is closing 252 madrasas and has sent show-cause notices to about 100 others after alleged violation of regulations were found during a survey, The Times of India reported.

The 252 unaided madrasas were served closure notices for allegedly not complying with rules pertaining to classroom space, adequate students or teachers and deviating from standard state school syllabus, the newspaper reported.
Action will be taken against the 100 other madrasas if their responses to the show-cause notices are unsatisfactory.
The notices were sent after a survey of unaided madrasas was conducted in July to check if they were authorised and complying with regulations.
Among the madrasas being closed, 45 are in Malda district, 37 in Uttar Dinajpur, and 25 each in South 24 Parganas, Murshidabad and Nadia, The Indian Express reported.
Kshudiram Tudu, the minister for minority affairs and madrasa education, said that the state government wants madrasa students “to pursue modern, mainstream education and shine in life just like students from other schools”, The Times of India reported.
Samik Bhattacharya, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s Bengal chief, said that madrasas should have been surveyed a long ago.
