Texas A&M athletics had another busy week, with several programs facing some of the best teams in the country. Volleyball experienced both sides of a top-six matchup, defeating No. 4 Stanford before falling just short against No. 6 Wisconsin.

The success was not limited to the two biggest sports in action. Texas A&M women’s golf came within one shot of winning its season-opening tournament, while the cross-country teams put together strong finishes at home. The team also faced tough moments, as the soccer team let a winnable game slip away in its SEC opener.
Here is a look at the most notable Texas A&M results and performances from the past week.
Texas A&M football pulls away from Arizona State
Texas A&M improved to 2-0 with a 48-20 win over Arizona State, but the final score doesn't tell the whole story.
The Aggies carried a 24-20 lead into the fourth quarter before scoring 24 unanswered points to put the game away. A&M’s defense forced four turnovers and scored twice, with Marco Jones and Julio Humphrey each returning an interception for a touchdown.
Isaiah Horton caught two touchdown passes, while David Olano finished with 12 points. However, the Aggies produced only 255 total yards and converted 3-of-12 third downs, leaving plenty to clean up before hosting Kentucky.
Volleyball splits two top-six matchups
No. 19 Texas A&M earned its first ranked victory of the season Wednesday by defeating No. 4 Stanford in four sets. The Aggies hit a season-best .344, led by Kyndal Stowers’ 15 kills and 11 digs.
A&M nearly added another major victory Friday but fell to No. 6 Wisconsin in five sets after holding a 2-1 advantage.
Kaia Castle delivered a career-high 19 kills without an attack error and hit .576. Kirra Musgrove recorded 51 assists, while Gabi Rodriguez finished with 20 digs and surpassed 100 for her career. The announced crowd of 9,211 was the third-largest in program history.
The Aggies return to action Tuesday against SFA.
Women’s golf finishes one shot short
No. 4 Texas A&M women’s golf opened its season with a runner-up finish at the Folds of Honor Collegiate.
The Aggies entered the final round eight shots behind before firing a 5-under 283 and briefly moving into first place. A&M finished at 2-under 862, only one shot behind Florida State.
Freshman Emerie Schartz shot a final-round 69 and tied for sixth. Texas A&M was also the only team to place all five golfers inside the top 20.
The Aggies return to the course at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic on Sept. 21.
Soccer drops SEC opener at Kentucky
Texas A&M soccer had several opportunities to leave Lexington with a victory but dropped its SEC opener 3-2 against Kentucky.
Freshman Ireland Churchill scored both goals for the Aggies, giving her seven over the last six matches. Her second goal tied the game in the 75th minute, but Kentucky responded with the deciding score two minutes later.
A&M had one final opportunity in the 85th minute, but Trinity Buchanan’s penalty kick was saved. The Aggies will remain on the road to face No. 2 Vanderbilt on Friday.
Cross country finishes strong at home
Texas A&M’s women finished second at the Texas A&M Invitational after making up 91 combined positions during the second half of the race.
Alexandra Fox led the Aggies with a ninth-place finish in 17:35.1, while Megan Roberts followed in 11th.
The men placed fifth despite fielding only five runners. Gavin Chapa led the group by finishing eighth, and Hunter Jackson placed 11th.
Both teams return to competition at the Princeton Meadows Challenge on Sept. 26.
Remaining undefeated in football was the biggest result, but volleyball and women’s golf also showed they can compete with some of the best teams in the country. Plenty remains to be improved across the board, especially with conference play beginning, but the Aggies gave fans several encouraging performances to build on.
