Great news for ice-cream lovers in Cape Town

Last month’s announcement that Cape Town artisan ice cream brand The Creamery would be closing appears to have been premature – with the business confirming on Tuesday that its stores will remain open and that a “new chapter lies ahead”.

The Creamery, which is owned by Food Lover’s Market through its subsidiary Seattle Coffee Company, previously announced that all four of its remaining Cape Town stores would close.
The branches affected were Mouille Point, Durbanville, Palmyra Junction in Claremont and Newlands.
The Creamery stays open
However, in confirmation received by The South African, the group said it was overwhelmed by the public response to news of its planned closure.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the messages, memories, and appeals from our loyal customers, and by the number of people who believe this much-loved brand deserves to keep doing what it does best,” the group said.
The group confirmed that it is moving forward with “fresh energy” and a “renewed focus”.
“We have some very good news. The Creamery is moving forward with fresh energy, a renewed focus, and a big appetite for what comes next,” it said.
From Newlands to a Cape Town favourite
The Creamery was founded in 2011 by former chef Kate Schrire and business partner Marianne Visser.
The pair initially built the business by selling handcrafted ice cream made with local and seasonal ingredients at Cape Town markets.
Its first permanent store opened in Newlands in 2013, before the brand expanded to several outlets and established a production facility in Salt River.
The Creamery went on to become one of South Africa’s best-known artisanal ice cream brands.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Seattle Coffee Company acquired the business after it faced significant financial pressures.
Schrire remained involved until 2023, while the business at one stage employed around 65 people.
The Creamery’s Constantia Emporium store closed in February 2023.
For now, however, Cape Town’s ice cream lovers have reason to celebrate.
