Deep in the second quarter, Pittsburgh looked poised to potentially put some points on the board. Mike McCarthy's side ambled across the 50-yard-line, embarking on a pilgrimage that put it within a few yards of the red zone.

On third-and-seven, Rodgers dropped back to pass, hoping to part with the oblong orb and send his side careening further towards New England's end zone. Instead, he was swept away in a tempest of navy-clad bodies, releasing the ball upon contact from Christian Elliss. The ball bumbled once it met the ground, dancing some 36 yards behind the line of scrimmage.

New England appeared the likelier of the two teams to recoup the ugly thing. Dre'Mont Jones and Christian Gonzalez each caressed the apparatus for a fleeting moment.

She was unwilling to be tamed, though. The ball slipped from both of their grasps, eventually settling at the 39-yard line. Troy Fautanu was the biggest beneficiary from the Marx Brothers-like sequence; the Steelers offensive lineman flailed to the ground to recover the ball, lying supine before being greeted by other bodies.

It was cartoonish, immature, anxiety-inducing and outrageous. It was also eye-catching — the sight of seeing the ball giving way to its tumbleweed-like intentions proved noteworthy, even if the incident that spurned the alteration didn't.
