Holy Cross mourns death of incoming volleyball player

WORCESTER — A volleyball player who became sick before being able to join the team at the College of the Holy Cross is being mourned after she died of a rare blood disorder.

Amanda Mack, 20, of Bradenton, Florida, enrolled at Holy Cross over the summer and was expected to begin classes at the start of the school year. She played volleyball for one year at Eastern Kentucky University before transferring.
Mack died on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute, according to a GoFundMe page set up by a friend, Kara Hill. She was being treated for severe aplastic anemia, Hill wrote.
A moment of silence for Mack was held at halftime of the Holy Cross football team's against Navy on Saturday. The volleyball team held a moment of silence during a match in the days after Mack's death.
"She had so much enthusiasm and passion, and she worked so hard to achieve incredible things in her life," Holy Cross volleyball coach Matthew Cribbin said of the incoming junior. "She was so excited to put on the Holy Cross jersey and help create something memorable in our program."
Mack, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter on the volleyball court, was an accomplished youth player, attending the IMG Academy.
Hill, a friend of Mack's since their early teens, wrote: "Amanda was a loving daughter, friend, and teammate who lit up every room she walked into. She beamed with positivity and was deeply passionate about life. Her warmth and kindness made her someone people loved being around, and her presence brought joy to those who knew her."
