‘Try to set a good example’ – Ryan Blaney opens up on his Bristol pit road fight with Carson Hocevar

Ryan Blaney and Carson Hocevar were engaged in what seemed like the biggest brawl in the NASCAR Cup Series competition for years. Days after the fight in Bristol, Blaney revealed what was going through his mind when he walked towards Hocevar.

It all started on Lap 457, as both Hocevar and Blaney were racing for the second spot. The young driver was trying to get ahead of the Team Penske driver on the inside. Blaney was trying to stop Hocevar and, in the process made contact with his car, causing him to spin.
Post the race, Blaney angrily walked towards Hocevar and initiated the altercation. The No. 77 driver made contact with two punches before Blaney went to the ground. However, the 32-year-old went running again through security and a pile of people to have a go at Hocevar.
The video of the brawl has been popular across social media, with several pages sharing one of the most heated moments in NASCAR’s recent history.
Blaney reveals why he walked over to Hocevar
Blaney, who normally has a very composed personality, was not pleased with what had happened during the race.
He had lost his chance to add to his points and put pressure on the likes of Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin.
However, Blaney was not happy with the way he reacted.
“Looking back on it, I’d say it was a 50/50…really, I’d put it on both parties. He’s not 100% to blame. I’m not 100% to blame. I think it was just two guys fighting for the bottom at Bristol,” said Blaney on the Action’s Detrimental podcast.
“There are things that I regret. I try to set a good example for kids who are watching or fans. Their parents who are allowing these kids to watch races and root for their driver.
“I try to act a certain way to what a kid would want to look up to. And I look back on those things and I definitely regret the way I acted. You know that’s really unlike me. But I was just frustrated.
“I went over there and I got my a** kicked for sure. I ate a two-piece and got tagged pretty good, but I just wanted to show my displeasure.”
Blaney was unable to complete the race, which is why he slipped two spots lower in the Chase standings to sixth place.
He will be hoping to move on from the race in Bristol, and focus on Kansas where Blaney’s record has not been very solid.
