Here are the Week 3 nominees (athletes listed in alphabetical order by last name):
Brody Carabello, quarterback, Manteca
Whatever Chico tried, Brody Carabello seemed to have an answer. The Manteca sophomore delivered the best game of his young career with 143 passing yards and four touchdowns, then added 72 rushing yards and another score in a 50-14 win that marked the Buffaloes' Sac-Joaquin Section-leading 648th all-time victory.
Daryl Carpenter, quarterback, River Island
Last year, Daryl Carpenter helped River Island make history with three wins. This year, the senior needed only four games to help top it, throwing for 329 yards and four touchdowns on 24-of-33 passing in a 41-2 win over Mountain House. Carpenter has powered the 4-0 start with 1,418 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and not a single interception.
Darien East, wide receiver, River Island
Maybe Darien East really is just destined to keep piling up yards, regardless of position. A year after rushing for more than 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns at Sierra, the River Island junior has surpassed 120 receiving yards in all four games, most recently catching six passes for 127 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-2 win over Mountain House.
David Grisham, running back, Tracy
Want a constant behind Tracy's rise to 4-0? Look no further than David Grisham. The senior topped 110 rushing yards for the fourth straight game with 131 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries in a 49-17 win over Ripon, helping the Bulldogs become MaxPreps' No. 1 team in the county and crack California's top 65.
Blama Kamara, wide receiver, Sierra
One play was all it took to see Blama Kamara's track speed. The Sierra senior, who had 11 first-place finishes across all events in track last year, turned one catch into a 99-yard touchdown and finished with a career-high 156 yards on five receptions in a 28-21 overtime win over Gregori. It was his third straight 100-yard receiving game.
Josiah Hargrove, wide receiver, McNair
Down its star receiver and the 424 yards and seven touchdowns that came with him, McNair needed someone else to step up. Josiah Hargrove did exactly that with eight catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns in a 56-38 loss to back-to-back SJAA champion Chavez, nearly doubling his career total of 91 receiving yards.
Albie Menchaca, running back, East Union
Opportunity took a little while to reach Albie Menchaca, but he hasn't wasted it. After injuries created competition in East Union's backfield, the senior followed a 62-yard, one-touchdown performance on the first two carries of his career last week by rushing 18 times for 112 yards and another score in a 42-0 win over Enochs.
Shawn San, quarterback, McNair
All a team can ask for in a loss is a fighting chance, and Shawn San gave McNair one. The junior went 31-of-54 for a career-high 370 yards and five touchdowns in a 56-38 loss to back-to-back SJAA champion Chavez, pushing his season totals to 1,210 yards and 15 touchdowns without an interception through four games.
Izzac Tapia, running back, Chavez
There was no soft introduction for Izzac Tapia in his first season as Chavez's lead back. He rushed for 206 yards and three touchdowns through a tough three-game non league schedule before nearly matching that production in one night. The senior piled up 185 yards and three scores on 16 carries, including a 97-yard touchdown, in a 56-38 win over McNair.
Tyler Van Elderen, athlete, Ripon Christian
So much production graduated from "the best Ripon Christian football team ever" that another 4-0 start seemed anything but guaranteed. Tyler Van Elderen has helped make it happen, returning an interception 73 yards for a touchdown while adding 38 yards and another score on 12 carries in a 21-7 win over previously undefeated Pioneer.
Elijah Walker, quarterback, Chavez
For once, a tough non league slate made Elijah Walker look human. The Chavez junior was held without a passing touchdown for the first time in his career and had another game with more interceptions than touchdowns, just the second time that had happened. Walker answered in the SJAA opener by going 18-of-24 for 337 yards and four touchdowns in a 56-38 win over McNair.
