Patriots open Brenden Schooler’s window to return from non-football injury list

The 2025 New England Patriots captain took part in Wednesday’s practice after sitting out the entirety of training camp. He had remained on the non-football injury list as the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline passed in August. But the 21-day window to return has now been opened in late September.

And at the earliest date it could under new league rules.

Players on the non-football injury list as well as physically unable to perform list are now eligible to resume practicing after the second week of the regular season. No roster activation can arrive until after the fourth week of the regular season, however, leaving a 1 p.m. ET kickoff at Gillette Stadium versus the Las Vegas Raiders circled in October.

Until then, road matchups against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills will go on without No. 41.

Schooler, 29, has appeared in 66 games since arriving as part of the organization’s 2022 undrafted class. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound former transfer from Oregon to Texas began his tenure with PFWA All-Rookie honors in the kicking game and has since added Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro selections.

After signing three-year contract extension with the Patriots in 2024, Schooler was named a team captain for the first time last season under special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer. The core safety has seen 1,433 snaps on special teams to go with 93 snaps on defense in a situational role. His career spans 59 combined tackles, two sacks, four fumble recoveries as well as one blocked field goal and punt.

Veteran outside linebacker Harold Landry III, a fellow 2025 captain, continues to reside on the PUP list for New England.
